Our Leader, Executives and Researchers

Our LeaderRufus Shinra

About The Man
Name: Rufus ShinRa

DOB: Unknown.

Place of Birth: Unknown. Most likely Midgar

Blood Type: Unknown

Age: Unknown. Approximately 21.

Height: Unknown. Approximately 5'11"

Weight: Unknown.

Hair color: Strawberry blonde

Eye Color: Blue

Family: Father(deceased). No other known

Weapon: Shotgun

Rufus ShinRa is Vice-President of the ShinRa Electric Company and takes over as President after his father is murdered by Sephiroth. The ShinRa company made it's fortune by converting mako energy from the earth into usable electric energy. After his father's death, his interests become finding Sephiroth and the promised land, a land supposedly abundant with mako energy. His father had been concerned with finding Aeris, an ancient, to study her and the connection between mako energy and the life stream, but Rufus does not persue this after he is President. Rufus is a ruthless leader, believing that it is better to control people through fear than through money as his father believed.

Personality

The first impression given by Rufus ShinRa is one of arrogance, greed, and cruelty. Rufus was introduced to us, after the gory death of his father,as the President. During this he shows absolutely no emotion and isn't effected by his father's death. He immediately orders that he not be called President ShinRa, but Presidend Rufus. He obviously resents his father, this being obvious in the renunciation of his father's name. Imagine what it must have been like for Rufus growing up. From what we know of the late President ShinRa, he wasn't exactly the most warm person, and certainly not a caring and nurturing father. Rufus probably had very little contact with his father and was brought up to take over the company and handle a large business with an iron fist. Which is exactly what he does. Rufus held a deep resentment for his father and in rebelling against him, perhaps became even crueler.
Rufus's father had believed in ruling people through money and false promises of protection. When Rufus succeeds him, he chooses to rule through fear. He states that even though his father's way worked, he has his own plan and that there is no need to waste money on the people. This shows that he cares very little for the people's well-being. Rufus does, however, shape the company into his own design and does it effectively. As ShinRa Inc. prospers, he used the power to search for the promised land and for Sephiroth. Rufus is fearless. He doesn't let anything stand in the way of getting what he wants and he shows no mercy or fear. Apparently, no one has ever seen him bleed or cry. That's a good example of the front he puts up and the way people see him. He is seen as untouchable and likes it that way.
Despite his coldness, Rufus seems to have a rather sarcastic sense of humor. This is obvious when he tells Heidegger to "Stop that stupid horse laugh". Rufus is also percieved as a rich brat, always wanting things his way and getting them. That's not really being spoiled though. Part of it is pure determination. He gets his way because he takes the required action to make things turn out in his favor. He may be slightly spoiled, but he knows it, and knows how to work people to his advantage.
Rufus isn't really all bad. He is a victim shaped by uncontrollable circumstances and events in his life. We don't think that Rufus is a cruel person by nature, he was simply brought up to be the best and to win at all costs. It was probably drilled into his head from a young age by his father that he must be ruthless and strong so that he could one day take over the company. Another thing to consider is his family life. He deeply resents his father, who was probably not around during most of Rufus's childhood. Lack of love in his family could have pushed him to be uncaring and to hide his emotions so that he won't be hurt.

Name: The meaning

The name Rufus gives you a practical, logical, analytical approach to life and a great deal of patience. You enjoy working at anything of a mechanical or technical nature, and believe that what is worth doing is worth doing well. When you are interested in a project, you concentrate all your thoughts on it and do not appreciate being interrupted. This name creates a deliberate and methodical way of thinking and speaking; it takes you time to learn but, once you have mastered a subject, you do not forget it. You are very systematic in all you do and do not like to see things out of order; however, there is a tendency for you to be too fussy. There is a seriousness to your nature which could cause you to worry over your responsibilities, especially when confronted with change and uncertainty.

Weapon

Shotgun: A light, smooth-bored gun, often double-barreled, especially designed for firing small shot at short range.
Rufus's weapon suits him well in our opinion. It allows him to keep a fair distance away from his opponant and keep from "getting his hands dirty". Rufus isn't the type to use something that would create gore, such a a knife or sword. And given his build and sheltered lifestyle, I doubt he'd be any good at hand-to-hand combat.

Executives

Heidegger

Heidegger: Head of Shin-Ra's Public Safety Maintenance Department, which is simply a euphemism for Shin-Ra's military, the elite SOLDIER unit and the Turks. He died when the Proud Clod, a mecha he and Scarlet were riding in, exploded after a battle with AVALANCHE. Nicknamed as "Gya ha ha" by Reeve, for his horse-like laugh.

Scarlet

Scarlet: Head of Shin-Ra's Weapons Development Department. Aspires to make the perfect weapon, but doesn't trust Heidegger to use it properly. The Shin-Ra executive responsible for the destruction of Barret Wallace's home town of Corel and for the loss of Barret's forearm. Helps in creating a large mako cannon, Sister Ray, used to fight WEAPON. Like Rufus, she is both cunning and ruthless. Nicknamed as "Kya ha ha" for her peculiar laugh by Reeve. She died along with Heidegger in the explosion of the Proud Clod.

Reeve Tuesti

Reeve Tuesti: Head of the Urban Development Department, he used Cait Sith as a way for him to spy on, and later aid, AVALANCHE. Along with Mayor Domino, he is one of the few officials in Shin-Ra who has a genuine concern for the common people. He is briefly arrested by Heidegger's men after the apparent death of Rufus. Reeve later founded the World Regenesis Organization (WRO), an organization devoted to the environmental reclamation of the planet after the collapse of the Shin-Ra Company.

Palmer

Palmer: The incompetent head of Shin-Ra's failed Space Exploration Department, Palmer is a bouncy, overweight man with some childlike behavior. He goes with Rufus to Rocket Town to steal Cid's plane, the Tiny Bronco. Although he is hit by a truck as he tries to escape Cloud and company, he, along with Reeve and Rufus, is one of the few Shin-Ra executives to survive recent events.

Reseachers

Professor Hojo

Hojo: The head of Shin-Ra's Science Department. He is a mad scientist with a God complex, undertaking radical experiments without any regard for ethics or the potential consequences of his research on his test subjects. Hojo regards the subjects of his experiments as mere "specimens," though most are human or otherwise sentient. He was Sephiroth's father.

Professor Gast

Gast: The former head of Shin-Ra's Science Research Department and Aerith's father. Gast seems to be a noble man who pursues knowledge for its own sake, rather than for the power it can bring. Gast finds Jenova during an excavation in the Northern Crater. After Jenova is transported to Nibelheim for further study of her origin and nature, Gast comes to the incorrect conclusion that the creature is a Cetra, and Shin-Ra sends Hojo and Lucrecia to assist him. Believing that they may be able to produce a modern-day Cetra, the scientists inject Jenova cells into the womb of the pregnant Lucrecia, who was carrying Hojo's child. At some undisclosed point in time, Gast leaves the project with a guilty conscience, although he doesn't officially leave Shin-Ra. Gast continues his research on the Ancients alone and meets Ifalna, one of the last surviving members of the Ancients' race, at Icicle Inn. There, Gast carries out a series of interviews with Ifalna, and in time, they fall in love and have a child together, Aerith. However, shortly after Aerith's birth, Hojo killed Gast during the attempt to capture both Ifalna and Aerith for further study.

Lucrecia Crescent

Lucrecia Crescent: Lucrecia was a female scientist who worked on the Jenova Project, alongside Professor Hojo and Professor Gast. She was Vincent’s love interest and Hojo’s lover, as well as the mother of Sephiroth.
She is the one who exposed Vincent to a form of stagnated mako called G Substance, which caused a being known as “Chaos” to be absorbed into his body. This saved his life from Hojo’s gunshot, but caused him to descend into a feral madness. She used the ancient Protomateria to control Chaos and calm Vincent, but she could not alleviate the remorse she felt. She attempted to kill herself, but was unable to easily die because of Jenova’s cells in her body, so she isolated herself from the world in a cave.

The Turks, SOLDIER and Genesis

Turks

Investigation Division of the General Affairs Department of the Shin-Ra Electric Power Company. They perform covert operations on behalf of the company, including espionage, kidnappings and assassinations. They also scout for potential candidates for Shin-Ra's elite military unit, SOLDIER, and serve as bodyguards for the Shin-Ra executives.

Main members

Tseng

Tseng is the stern but polite and calm leader of the Turks. He has long, black hair and what appears to be a tilak in the middle of his forehead. Though he is young, he has been an active member of the Turks for more than 10 years, and has known Aerith Gainsborough, for whom he seems to have romantic feelings since she was a child. Despite his long-standing admiration for Aerith, there are hints that his affections later shift to Elena.
He is wounded by Sephiroth during an investigation of the Temple of the Ancients. After enduring torture at the hands of Kadaj he is rescued along with Elena by Vincent Valentine
.

Elena

Elena is a junior member of the Turks. She is a young woman with short, blonde hair and brown eyes. Though she resented — and wanted no contact with — her sister and the other Turks for outperforming her in their status, an encounter with them convinced her to join the group. Elena then obtained her position as the newest recruit after Reno sustained injuries battling AVALANCHE in Midgar.
Elena is naive, impetuous and somewhat overeager, with a loose tongue that sometimes causes her to inadvertently reveal secret information. She takes her job much more seriously than Reno and Rude do, and also becomes quite frustrated with their casual attitudes. She also has a crush on Tseng.

Reno

Reno is a prominent member of the Turks with a lanky physique, unkempt red hair terminating in a long ponytail and two symmetrical red marks on his cheek bones. He is always seen wearing goggles on his forehead, an unzipped suit jacket and an untucked dress shirt. He is cocky, cynical, and somewhat lazy, but is highly skilled and takes great pride in his work. His fighting skills are obviously far above the level of a normal human, but he is defeated with relative ease by Loz and Yazoo. Reno also has a penchant for gossiping and is a competent helicopter pilot.

Rude

Rude is a tall, bald man with a slight goatee. He always wears sunglasses and carries spare pairs with him. Rude is rarely seen without his long-time partner, Reno, and is rather taciturn, tending to relegate the talking to Reno. He also becomes uncomfortable when brought into a conversation. Rude is a superb physical combatant and prefers to use his fists in battle. Years ago, when there was war between AVALANCHE and Shinra, Rude fell in love with a woman named Chelsea. Unfortunately, she was an AVALANCHE spy, who as well fell in love with Rude, but left him because they were on different sides. Rude didn't take it so well, especially since he couldn't even say goodbye to her, since then, he's been rather quiet and refuses to get close to anyone emotionally.

Former Turks

Verdot is the previous leader of the Turks. He is very particular on matters relating to succeeding in missions and very unforgiving when it comes to failure. Tseng considers him a role model and eventually succeeds him. Though many of his subordinates are intimidated by his severity, they all deeply respect him. Formerly a resident of the town of Kalm, he had a daughter and wife that he believed perished when the town was razed due to his own misinterpreted commands. In actuality, his daughter survived, and is eventually revealed to be the leader of AVALANCHE, Elfé. He cares very deeply for the Turks, and does not wish for them to suffer any events similar to what he has; he also cares very much for his daughter, defecting from Shin-ra when he discovers she is alive.

Vincent Valentine, served as a gunman in the Turks. While on a mission in Nibelheim during the later stages of the Jenova Project, Vincent was shot by Professor Hojo, who then used his body for experimental purposes. The experiments altered his body in many ways, including fixing his physical age. Though he's chronologically 60 years old, he still bears the appearance he held at 27.

SOLDIER

Shin-Ra's elite military unit, itself divided into three ranks: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class. Zack and Sephiroth are former 1st Class members. Members of SOLDIER are scouted by the company's Investigation Division of the General Affairs Department — alias, "the Turks." Those determined strong enough to mentally and physically handle the program's process of being infused with mako and injected with Jenova's cells receive the treatment, gaining powerful increases in their physical and cognitive ability. As a side-effect of their mako-infusion, members of SOLDIER have a peculiar glow in their eyes; this phenomenon is called "mako eyes."

Zack

Zack was born in the town of Gongaga, where he lived until he join Shin-Ra's militant forces. After the Genesis incident Zack was among those sent to the town of Nibelheim, accompanying Sephiroth to check on itsMako reactor. When they arrive at the reactor, Sephiroth quickly dispatches the monsters infesting the area. However, when he goes inside the reactor, he finds out much more than he bargained for and goes insane. Everyone returns to Nibelheim to rest, but Zack meets Sephiroth in the basement of the Shinra Mansion. Sephiroth storms off after the confrontation, and sets the whole town on fire. Zack is unable to do anything.
Cloud saves him among others prior to chasing Sephiroth to the Nibelheim reactor. There, Tifa attacks Sephiroth in an attempt to avenge her father and Nibelheim and is seriously wounded. Cloud tends to her while Zack goes on to confront Sephiroth. Zack, however, is eventually defeated, and Sephiroth leaves while Cloud stands by mortified. Cloud rushes to Zack's aid, who gives him his Buster Sword and tells him to go after Sephiroth. Cloud confronts Sephiroth on a high gangway inside the reactor, where he is impaled by the officer's Masamune. Cloud manages to summon the power to throw him off the gangway into the depths of the reactor. Cloud then collapses.

Zack and Cloud are retrieved by Shin-Ra forces and kept in custody. They are subjected against their will to biological experimentation involving genetic material from Jenova, under the supervision of Professor Hojo. Eventually, Zack broke out and literally drags Cloud with him during their escape. Zack gives Cloud some of his clothes and gets them transport to Midgar. During this time, Cloud is weak, groggy and somewhat delirious, as he had reacted more strongly to the experiments than Zack did, though he was unknowningly driven by the Reunion. However, Zack talks continuously to the unresponsive Cloud about his life and his plans to become a mercenary in Midgar, get rich and be with his girlfriend, though he never revealed her name. When they finally arrive outside of Midgar, the Shin-Ra security force that have been searching for them finally catch up. They try to detain the escaped prisoners, but Zack fights back to defend both Cloud and himself. The Shin-Ra troops, armed with machine guns, shoot Zack to death and leave Cloud for dead after seeing his vegetative state. However, Cloud manages to recover. The combined weight of all this trauma finally makes him snap, and he adopts Zack's persona, combining it with his own. He believes that he was successful in joining SOLDIER, and that he fulfilled Zack's role in the fateful mission to Nibelheim. Cloud took Zack's buster sword and continues on to Midgar. Upon his arrival, Cloud seeks work as a mercenary, just as Zack said he intended to do.

Sephiroth

Wishing to study the effects of Jenova's cells on a human subject, Hojo and Lucrecia volunteered their unborn son for experimentation, who was henceforth injected with Jenova cells in the womb. After his birth, Sephiroth was raised by Shin-Ra, having been told that a "Jenova" was his mother, but without knowing who or what Jenova was. With superhuman abilities gained from the Jenova Project experments, Sephiroth became a top-member in SOLDIER, with the highlight of his career in the Midgar/Wutai war.
A year after the war, during a mission to check on a Mako reactor at Nibelheim, Sephiroth discovered his horrifying origins as an experiment and integral role in the Jenova Project. This information corrupts him and drives him insane, after which he lays waste to the town and proceeds to the reactor to release his "mother." Zack, a fellow 1st class SOLDIER, arrives at the reactor to stop Sephiroth, but is sent reeling from Jenova's chamber after confronting him. While finally liberating Jenova, Sephiroth is caught off-guard and stabbed by Cloud, armed with Zack's Buster Sword. Sephiroth limps from the chamber carrying the severed head of Jenova, when Cloud attempts to finish him off. The fight ended with Sephiroth falling off the reactor and into the Lifestream.
Presumably thought dead, Sephiroth traveled the Lifestream, learning the truth of Jenova's nature, before ending up in the Northern Cave sealed in Mako while absorbing Jenova's head. But though physically unable, Sephiroth hatched a plot to absorb the planet's energy, turning himself into a "god."
Notions of Sephiroth's apparent death are put to question when Cloud and company are detained in Shin-Ra's headquarters. On the eve before a public execution, they escape, aided by a mysterious third party who has devastated the facility. Cloud finds the Shin-Ra president assassinated, impaled by a sword he confirms belongs to Sephiroth. However, "Sephiroth" was actually Jenova's body taken over by Sephiroth's will and remolded in his image as his puppet in order to get the "Sephiroth Copies", members of SOLDIER injected with Jenova's cells to make them as powerful as him, to have the Reunion in the Northern Cave.

Sephiroth's goal, as revealed later by Bugenhagen, is to sap the planet of its Lifestream with the aid of the Black Materia and its cataclysmic power referred to as Meteor. Aerith attempted to stop him with the White Materia and its defensive power, Holy. Though she suceeded, Aerith was murdered by Sephiroth, leaving the White Materia active but unused. Cloud procures the Black Materia but is emotionally manipulated against his will into relieving ownership. Sephiroth called forth Meteor and awaited its arrival within a sealed Northern Crater.
The barrier is penetrated by Shin-Ra, thus allowing Cloud and the rest of AVALANCHE to descend into the Northern Crater and fight Bizzaro Sephiroth, before he molted out of his cocoon as Safer Sephiroth. With the destruction of his physical body, Sephiroth's spirit made a final mental assault upon Cloud within the Lifestream, attempting to overcome his will yet again and claim Cloud's body as his own. However, Cloud overcomes Sephiroth in the mental duel and banishes his spirit back to the Planet's life energy.

Angeal

A SOLDIER that works together with Zack. From the way he speaks, it seems he has seniority over Zack. Moreover, it seems that he is also in a position of guidance in techniques and doctrines. He is the mentor of not only Zack but a mentor to others in SOLDIER as well, and seems to be on good terms with fellow SOLDIER Sephiroth. He is the previous wielder of the Buster Sword which Cloud inherited from Zack. Also, for some reason, Angeal does not like using the Buster Sword, claiming that it would be "a waste". He bears two white wings on his back. Though this seems to cause him some internal conflict as he considers it the trait of a monster, Zack instead suggests that they are "the wings of an angel". He is later seen talking to Zack, asking Zack to fight alongside him, saying "Our enemies are all those who torment the Planet."

Project Genesis

G

An existence shrouded in mystery. New information indicates he served as a 1st Class SOLDIER alongside Sephiroth and Angeal, and knew Zack as well. He was ultimately the forerunner and reason for the hidden SOLDIER organization known as Deep Ground. Known as G, he is tied with another dark secret of Shin-Ra. "Project Genesis."

Information On The Company

Overview
Originally a small weapons development company, Shin-Ra grew into a world government when Mako power was developed. Mako Energy is created through the process of extracting a green etheral substance called "Spirit Energy" from the Lifestream and out of the Planet via mako reactors where it is then condensed into a liquid and processed into a source of fuel and electrical energy.
During an international war that had lasted several years, Shin-Ra developed the means of manufacturing mako and Materia, small spheres that allow their wielders access to magical abilities. Investing in the marketing of this substance and the mass-production of a line of elite military units called "SOLDIERs", individuals showered in mako and injected with the cells of the alien being Jenova, Shin-Ra quickly brought the war to an end. Reaping incredible profits from the development — and monopolization — of these technologies, they proceeded to build the city of Midgar, which became their capital. As the siphoning of Spirit Energy and the process of condensing it into Mako Energy within reactors is highly expensive, the President Shinra began searching for the fabled Promised Land, a place he believed to be abundant in naturally-rising mako, where a new city called "Neo-Midgar" could be constructed.

Despite being classifed as a corporation, its operations resemble more those of a government than those of a typical company, as it has a standing military with various specialized operatives, and local politicians — such as Domino, the mayor of Midgar — are housed as employees within the Shin-Ra headquarters.
Shin-Ra is comprised of several departments: Urban Development headed by Reeve Tuesti; Public Safety Maintenance headed by Heidegger; Weapons Development headed by Scarlet; Science headed by Professor Hojo; and Space Exploration headed by Palmer.
Shin-Ra owns and operates the infrastructure of Midgar, the Junon military base, the rebuilt town of Nibelheim and the various mako reactors scattered around the world. They also financed the building and operation of the Gold Saucer, a combined amusement park-casino entertainment complex. The mako reactors are the 8 mako reactors around Midgar, the Mt. Nibel reactor, the Corel reactor, the Gongaga reactor, the undersea reactor at Junon and the Fort Condor reactor. The Fort Condor reactor is no longer in operation , and the Gongaga reactor suffered a meltdown , suspending operations there. Reactors 1 and 5 in Midgar are destroyed by AVALANCHE, but was repaired later.
Leadership
Shin-Ra's leadership has changed several times. The first leader is President Shinra who ruled through money control, but after being murdered by Sephiroth, he is succeeded by his son Rufus, who had served as vice-president until that time, as President, Rufus is even more ruthless, preferring to rule through fear rather than money. Rufus himself is then seemingly killed , engulfed in an explosion at the Shin-Ra headquarters. Temporarily without a leader to control the company, the other executives attempt seizing control, in some cases turning on each other to gain momentary power. Rufus survived his ordeal and has the intentions of restoring his company and undoing the damage it caused to the Planet. He is still followed by four members of the Turks, Reno, Rude, Elena, and Tseng, all of which are very loyal to him. It is also possible some former SOLDIERs follow him.
Military
Shin-Ra maintains its own military, officially referred to as "The Department of Public Safety Maintenance", which consists of units of various ranks, as well as the specially trained and elite SOLDIERs. Other notable aspects of Shin-Ra's everyday military forces include widespread usage of advanced robotics and hover technology.
Shin-Ra also employs their Turks operatives, officially entitled as "The Investigation Division of the General Affairs Department", whose duties include the scouting of potential SOLDIER recruits, assassinations, espionage and serving as bodyguards for the company's executives.
Mako creations and uses
Mako serves as Shin-Ra's main source of profit, as well as the basis for many of their weapons and inventions.

Mako Reactor
One of the primary uses of mako within Shin-Ra, the Mako Reactor condenses mako energy into liquid form for use as a fuel and as a source of electrical power, and have made fossil fuels such as oil and coal obsolete. Shin-Ra uses the growing dependence of the planet's population on mako energy as a way of gaining and strengthening their control of the world. Thirteen Mako reactors - the eight in Midgar, the Mt. Nibel reactor, the Corel reactor, the Gongaga reactor, the undersea reactor at Junon, and the Fort Condor reactor. The Fort Condor reactor is no longer in operation, and the Gongaga reactor had suffered a meltdown. Midgar Reactors 1 and 5 are destroyed by AVALANCHE, but number 5 is repaired in time to be used to power the Sister Ray along with the remaining six.

Junon Cannon/Sister Ray
The Shin-Ra naval base over the fishing town of Junon was equipped with an enormous artillery cannon, which was longer than the town itself aimed out over the sea. It fires massive mako-enhanced artillery shells of extraordinary range and destructive power, as seen when the cannon destroys the Sapphire WEAPON with a single shot, when the WEAPON attacks Junon. After the destruction of the Sapphire WEAPON, it was rendered useless by the removal of Junon's huge materia, and was moved to Midgar, where it could be powered by the combined output of the city's eight mako reactors.
In its new form, the cannon was fired only once in attempt to destroy the energy barrier Sephiroth had erected around the Northern Crater, the recoil from the blast was strong enough to break all of the windows in the Shin-Ra Tower, and the blast itself was strong enough to destroy both the Diamond WEAPON, which the beam passed through as if it weren't there, and the energy barrier that was its target. Later, AVALANCHE infiltrated Midgar and disabled the Sister Ray to prevent an overload incited by Professor Hojo, Head of Shin-Ra's Science Department, that could have destroyed the entire city.
The Sister Ray still stands, though it has fallen into decay along with the rest of the Midgar.

Other uses
Mako is also one of the two main components in enhancing members of SOLDIER, examples of individuals enhanced with mako include Zack, Cloud Strife and Sephiroth, and materia, is a valuable source of income for Shin-Ra, as well as a powerful source of weaponry, used by both the Turks and SOLDIER. It is also used in a series of experiments by Professors Gast and Hojo on living people.
